Most DFW homeowners are leaving $100–$300 on the table because they don't know their city offers a smart-controller rebate — or they tried to apply once, the form was confusing, and they gave up. This guide solves both. Every Mid-Cities city we serve, current amount, eligibility, link, and paperwork status. Updated quarterly. If you book a smart-controller install with us, we file the rebate for you.
DFW smart-sprinkler rebates are funded primarily by three sources: (1) the city's own water utility budget, (2) regional water-conservation partnerships like the Trinity River Authority (TRA) and Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), and (3) federal/state grant programs that flow through local utilities.
Most programs work the same way: you (or your installer) buy a WaterSense-labeled smart controller from the city's approved list, install it, and submit an application within a defined window (usually 90 days post-purchase). The city verifies your water account, the model, and the install, then issues a credit to your water bill or mails a check.
The catch: programs change frequently. Frisco's $100 rebate was active in 2024, suspended pending evaluation in 2025, and may resume in 2026. Plano, Allen, and Richardson have all run programs at various times. Irving's SmartScape and Dallas's Save Dallas Water programs have been the most consistent in the Metroplex. We track these monthly and update this page quarterly.
Status as of 2026-05-03. Always verify current amount with the city before purchase. Programs and budgets change quarterly. We re-verify every program monthly and update this page.

Almost every DFW rebate program requires a WaterSense-labeled smart controller. WaterSense is an EPA certification given to controllers that demonstrate they reduce water use by at least 20% compared to a standard controller in the same conditions.
The most commonly approved models across DFW cities, in 2026:
8 or 16 zones · WiFi · weather adjustment · WaterSense certified · ~$229–$329 retail
6, 12, or 24 zones · WiFi · predictive watering · WaterSense certified · ~$189–$399
4–22 zones · modular design · WiFi via LNK module · WaterSense certified · ~$175–$310
6, 12 zones · WiFi · weather-based · WaterSense certified · ~$129–$189
Each city maintains its own approved-models list, which changes a few times a year as new controllers earn WaterSense certification or older models are deprecated. Before we recommend a controller, we cross-check against your city's current list.
When you book a smart-controller install with Waterline, we handle the entire rebate paperwork as part of the project. Specifically:
Forget the rebate for a second. The real savings come from the smart controller itself. Typical DFW homeowner numbers, conservative:
| Average DFW summer water bill (with sprinklers) | $280/mo |
| Typical smart-controller water reduction | 30–40% |
| Monthly savings (April–October, 7 months) | $84–$112/mo |
| Annual savings (conservative) | $590–$780/yr |
| Smart-controller install (Waterline, all-in) | $549–$729 |
| City rebate (when applicable) | −$100 to −$250 |
| Net first-year cash impact | +$211 to +$481 |
In other words: a smart controller pays for itself in the first season, even before the rebate. Every season after that is pure savings. Most DFW homeowners with original-build mechanical controllers are leaving $500+/year on the lawn.
Many DFW cities run smart-controller rebate programs through their water utilities or in partnership with Trinity River Authority, Dallas Water Utilities, and Tarrant Regional Water District. Active programs include Irving (SmartScape) and Dallas (Save Dallas Water). Frisco's program is currently suspended. See the table above for your specific city's status.
Most DFW programs require WaterSense-labeled smart controllers. Common qualifying models: Rachio 3, Hunter Hydrawise HC/Pro-HC, Rain Bird ESP-TM2 with LNK WiFi, and Orbit B-hyve Pro. Each city maintains an approved list — we verify before we recommend.
No. Most DFW programs accept professional installation by a Texas licensed irrigator. We file the rebate paperwork as part of the install — you receive the credit on your water bill or as a check.
Typical processing time is 4–8 weeks from when the city receives the application. Some cities apply the credit directly to your water bill (faster); others mail a check (slower).
Yes. As part of every smart-controller install, we complete the application package — invoice, model details, install photos, water account info — and submit it. You don't have to do anything except wait for the credit.
